| Bequest
Nets Campus $300,000 |
| The
Broome Community College Foundation has recently received an
unrestricted bequest of nearly $300,000 from Harvey and Marion
Roehl. Harvey Roehl graduated from Cornell University, was a
WWII veteran, retiring with the rank of Major from the US Air
Force Reserves. Mr. Roehl was one of the original staff at BCC,
serving as President Cecil C. Tyrrell's Dean of Administration
for more than twenty years. |
|

|
Mr.
Roehl wrote that he saw his first player piano when he was
ten years old and was hooked ever since. He bought his first
player piano in 1946 after he returned from the war. Throughout
their life together the Roehls shared a passion for mechanical
musical instruments. They had no children. Their growing collection
of instruments, which they found and lovingly restored, made
their home in Vestal a mecca for all lovers of mechanical
musical instruments.
|
|
They
visited and learned from everyone they could. In 1961 Roehl
started the Vestal Press and printed his book The Player
Piano Treasury at the same time to bring information to
automatic music collectors and hobbyists. This was a sideline
business, but as it grew and became very successful, he and
Marion could no longer keep up while he worked full-time at
BCC. His retirement in 1972 from his job as Dean gave him
the time he needed and the business flourished. He is still
remembered today by people who knew him then as one of the
most original and unusual people on campus.
|
|
In
the more than thirty years since Harvey retired from Broome,
the College has also grown and flourished. It is most gratifying
that he and Marion chose to make such a significant gift to
BCC from their estate.

Memoriam: John Young |
On November
27, John J. Young, retired BCC photographer and teacher, passed
away quietly at his home in Charleston, West Virginia. He was
75. John worked at Broome Technical Community College in the
Audio Visual department and was, at one time, the advisor for
BCC Student Government. He also started a camera club on campus
to teach students the finer qualities of photography. This lead
to the creation of photography classes that are now part of
BCC's Communications and Media Arts Curriculum. John retired
from BCC in 1995.
Throughout his career, John was |
|
|
considered one
of the world's greatest rail photographers, with many of his
photos being published in books and magazines. He was honored
by former Governor Underwood of West Virginia as a "state
hero" for his documentation of West Virginia's railroad
history and his photos and stories are on permanent display
at the old B & O station in Wheeling. He will be remembered
for all of his contributions-not only to the rail community
and museums, but also for touching the lives of many people
who were fortunate to know him.
John is survived by his wife Elizabeth, five children and
their spouses, grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
Cards of sympathy may be sent to the family in care of:

Faculty Update: a letter from
Bill Beston, Engineering Science |
I
am now living in sunny Corpus Christi
I have been teaching
mathematics at Park University and College Physics I and II
Labs at Texas A&M- Corpus Christi. This summer I taught
the lecture and lab for Physics I and II so I was quite busy.
Its keeping me a little busier than I might want, but I have
been trying to make sure I have a extra money coming in
I
bought a new 18' Blue Wave fishing boat and have enjoyed being
able to use that on the weekends. I only use it on the intercoastal
waters, the Gulf is a little too rough. This a cool down month
and by late December, the fishing is supposed to be spectacular.
I attached last week's catch...
I
still do consulting for NSF and get back to Arlington Va about
every other month
This past month I reviewed grant proposals
for the State of Oklahoma and NSF.
