Sara
Henry (96) has established her career in New York
City and uses her BCC Communications degree to explore
the technical end of broadcasting. As an assistant director
in CBSs The Morning Show, she repairs any mistakes
that were made in the initial taping for versions that
are aired in other time zones. The most perfect
shows are the ones on the West Coast, she said.
She is in charge of all the shows graphics. For
instance, during the war in Iraq, she became an expert
on military weapons, planes and aircraft carriers and
what they looked like.
Three
months of eating and sleeping it, Sarah says,
I knew every map of Iraq.
During
that time, the CBS staff was required to put in long
hours, often 12 and 13-hour days. The day they
were tearing down the statues, around 11 a.m., it was
my shift. I knew then, Wow, we can have weekends
off!
During
most of the year, though, she admits that, Its
not as hard as I thought it would be (to work at CBS).
The hardest part was getting in the door.
She
made an important first step when she took one of the
BCC Communications Club field trips to New York City
while a student at BCC. When the club visited the Geraldo
show, she introduced herself to a production supervisor
who suggested she send her resume to him when she graduated.
It was that contact that eventually landed her the job
at CBS.
Other
assistant directors she works with have less technical
know-how, and that makes her more valuable. If
I hadnt gone to Broome and gotten the technical
background, I wouldnt be where I am now.
