Gordan Thomasson Visits Mexico Through Sister-Campus Exchange

From June 9-13, Gordon C. Thomasson, with the support of the BCC Foundation and BCC's International Education program, pioneered a sister-campus exchange with the University of Celaya (UDEC), in Celaya, Guanajuato, Mexico. Gordon lectured in the UDEC medical school to a variety of groups throughout the week (to some in English and others in Spanish), including faculties of Human Development, Architecture, and Engineering. Gordon used his anthropological and historical studies of Indigenous Knowledge Systems to present both baseline data for the audiences’ respective fields, and ways in which ancient and pre-conquest technologies might have application in even the present day. His presentations were followed in the summer by the visit of Professor Alejandro Saldaña from UDEC to BCC, where he taught a summer course in statistics for students of the CASS program.

College Work Study Jobs Needed

Do you have a student position available in your office? Is it funded with College/County work study funding and NOT Federal work study funding? If so, perhaps you are interested in publicizing the position to our F-1 student population. There are over 80 F-1 students that may be interested in working for you.

Immigration regulations do not allow F-1 students to find off-campus employment without special authorization, which can be difficult to obtain.  On-campus work is their only opportunity to work! On-campus work allows them to earn supplemental income while building a connection to the college campus.

Students have a variety of skills and various levels of English ability.

If you have a position, please contact Beverly Plowucha at ext. 5001 or plowucha_b@sunybroome.edu. Position details and contact information will be posted to the F-1 students.  The students can then contact you directly for an application and interview.  If you provide a detailed job description, we can find the best qualified student for your office.

Influenza Shots Available

Influenza (flu) season is approaching! Protect yourself with a flu shot!
CDC recommends a yearly flu vaccine as the first and most important step in protecting against this serious disease.

The flu vaccine will be administered to BCC faculty and staff at the Student Health Services office every Tuesday during the month of October, between the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (closed 12-12:30 for lunch). No appointment is necessary.

For more information, please contact Peg Smith at ext. 5180.

Help Save a Life - Donate Blood

The Medical Laboratory Technology and Medical Assisting Clubs are sponsoring a blood drive:

Thursday October 9
10 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Please rise to the challenge by not only encouraging your students to donate, but also by setting an appointment to donate yourself. There will be recruiting tables set up in the Student Center and the Business Building Lobby on October 6, 7, and 8 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Or, to schedule an appointment, please call Natascha Franco in the MLT/MA Department Office at ext. 5211.

By donating blood, you can actually help save the lives of up to three people! Currently only about 5% of the eligible population donates blood, but in order to meet the growing needs of our community, this number needs to increase. We're asking you to take advantage of this opportunity to give the “Gift of Life.”

In order to reach our blood drive participation goal this year, it is crucial that we have the support of the entire campus community, family, and frieds. It is not enough to rely solely on the donations of our students, especially considering the blood shortages our region has faced recently.

Some donors may be able to “Double Their Donation" by being Double Red Donors.  Check out this link to see if you are eligible: http://www.donatebloodnow.org/SponsorDrive/doublered.asp

Thank you so much for your support and donation!

Transfer Day is Coming Up

Approximately 50 colleges and universities will be in attendance. Please share this information with your students over the next few weeks.
