Eight guidelines to use when evaluating statistical studies in the news.
1.  Identify the goal, type and population.
2.  Consider the source.
3.  Look for bias in the sample.
4.  Look for difficulties in defining quantities of interest.
5.  Look for difficulties in measuring quantities of interest.
6.  If a survey is involved consider its setting and wording.
7.  Check for consistency between results and interpretation
8.  Stand back and consider the conclusions: What does it mean to you?

Skills to be mastered:
1.  Identify possible bias in sample selection.
2.  Recognize the eight guidelines for evaluating a statistical study.
