MAT 113 Project Description and Due Dates


The MAT 113 project is intended to spark your interest in mathematics and to reveal some of the mathematics that is all around us. 

 

The project will consist of the following five components:
1. Developing a list of possible topics/areas of study. (Group Work)

2. Identifying your topic of choice and developing your plan.
3. Gathering sources of information about your topic.
4. Writing a paper to carry out your plan. (750 to 1000 words)
5. Presenting your topic to the class with a Power Point presentation.
 

 Due Date 

 Description

PART I

 

Week 3

Working in groups of 3 or 4 you will develop a list of at least 10 possible topics/areas of study.

 

Along with your group you will present this list to the class. One copy of your group's list should be emailed to the instructor by the due date.  Be sure all names are included.


PART II 

Week 5

 

Choose your topic and develop your plan. 

 

This includes two items:

 

  1. A description of your topic and some explanation of your goals for the paper.
  2. An outline for your paper.

 

Note:  No two students in a class can choose the same topic.

Submit your description and outline to your instructor in hard copy by the beginning of class on the due date.

PART III 

Week 7

Gather sources of information about your topic.

 

1. Use at least two sources whose content comes directly from the internet. 
2. Use at least one source whose content is not from the internet. This could be a journal article, a book, a newspaper article, an educational video etc.  (Note:  You may need to use the web to find your source.  The BCC Library homepage may be helpful, http://www.sunybroome.edu/~library/index.php or you may wish to ask a librarian for assistance.) 

Submit evidence to your instructor that you have access to these materials giving proper credit to the sources.  Send the list of sources to your instructor as a file attachment to an email.

PART IV 

Week 10

Write a paper to carry out your plan.

This is the main part of the project.  The content of the paper should address the goals you set for your project using the outline developed in Part II.

Submit your final paper to your instructor in hard copy at the beginning of class on the due date.  The length of the paper should be between 750 and 1000 words.  Be sure to include a hard copy of your sources.

PART V 

Weeks 11 to 13
 

Power Point presentation.

This is a 5-minute presentation that should provide the class with a summary of your project.  Please email the presentation file to your instructor as an email attachment by the due date.
