Mathematical Explorations II

 

TEXT: USING and UNDERSTANDING MATHEMATICS Bennett/Briggs

PREREQUISITE: MAT 090 Foundations for College Mathematics I or equivalent

OBJECTIVES: This course is an interdisciplinary approach to topics in mathematics using computer technology. Topics include: numbers in the real world, exponential growth, mathematics and the arts, fundamentals of geometry, practical geometry. This course is not designed to prepare you for further mathematics courses although we hope it will encourage you to learn more about mathematics. Course outlines and objectives are on file in Mathematics Department office.

ATTENDANCE: Attendance at every class is expected. You are responsible for all material covered and any announcements made regardless of the reason for your absence.

HOMEWORK/QUIZZES: Homework will be assigned on a regular basis. Late assignments may not be accepted. Quizzes may be given at the discretion of the instructor.

ACTIVITIES: There will be an in-class activity for most classes. These activities will be graded. Late activities may not be accepted.

PROJECT: A project worth 20% of your course grade is required. A detailed explanation will be distributed. Topics can be chosen shortly thereafter.

TESTS: There will be three tests given during the semester. If a test is missed for a valid reason, as determined by the instructor, then make-up arrangements can be made only if the instructor has been notified prior to the time of the test.

FINAL EXAM: A comprehensive final exam will be given during the final exam period. Failure to take the final at the scheduled time will result in an "F" grade for the course.

CALCULATOR: A scientific calculator is required. Calculators may not be shared during exams.

GRADING: The course grade is based on the following equally weighted criteria.
In-Class Activities 20%
Homework /Quizzes 20%
Exams 20%
Project 20%
Comprehensive Final Exam 20%

Pluses and minuses may be used for extremes of appropriate grade levels.
