PRESS RELEASE

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT

The Phelps Mansion Museum is proud to announce that it will be awarding an annual $500 scholarship to an exemplary Broome Community College student in the area of Fine Arts and Design. The Phelps Mansion received its provisional charter as a Museum under the New York State Board of Regents in June, 2005, and since then has actively pursued broadening its impact in the area of arts education.

“This scholarship fund is important to us because it enables us to accomplish our purpose to promote the interests of education, literature, and the arts. Also, our membership feels that it is important to acknowledge and to reward the achievements of our local students. Broome Community College is the ideal venue in which to accomplish this since students from each of our local school districts attend BCC,” explained Mary Lousie Casella, Corresponding Secretary of the Museum.

The Phelps Mansion Museum, located on Court Street in Binghamton, is dedicated to the discovery, conservation and dissemination of information and knowledge about traditions of the Binghamton area to our community and its children, and to the preservation of this unique Victorian facility and its collections. It has collaborated with faculty from the Broome Community College for a number of years.

Dr. Judy U. Siggins, Executive Director of the Broome Community College Foundation says, “Our program in Art and Design has grown dramatically over the last several years through the dedication of our faculty, graduating many extremely talented students. This award will be a wonderful way to recognize our student achievers in the Fine Arts.”
