May 3, 2006 Media Advisory Broome Community College President Dr. Laurence (TOWN OF DICKINSON, NY) Broome Community College President Dr. Laurence Spraggs will host the College’s annual Merit Scholarship Event at 5:30 p.m., Thursday, May 4, 2006 in the Student Center Dining Hall, which is located on campus. More than 200 students will be recognized for their academic achievements and service to the campus and community. Awards will be presented from alumni, current and retired faculty and from the BCC Foundation. Awards include the Presidential Scholarship, the Baccalaureate Scholarship, Academic All Stars and many, many more. “The Merit Scholarship is an opportunity to recognize students for their academic and personal accomplishments,” said BCC President Dr. Spraggs. “Our students play a significant role in the growth and development of this community and what they achieve at Broome Community College will impact the Southern Tier and beyond.” Award recipients will also receive a financial stipend depending on the award received, which were made possible by the BCC Foundation, local community members, organizations and businesses. “For more than forty years now the BCC Foundation has been raising private funds from alumni, from faculty and staff and from the community to help ensure the opportunity for a quality BCC education,” continued Dr. Spraggs. “This year more than 600 students will have received either grants in aid or merit scholarships made possible by gifts to the Foundation and I am grateful for the continued to support of this community. An investment in education is an investment in our future.”
