The English-As-A-Second
Language (ESL) courses at Broome Community College are specifically designed to prepare international
students for university level study and focuses on building English language
proficiency in the areas of grammar, composition, speech, listening and
reading.
ESL
courses are offered at four different levels of
English language proficiency: Lower, Intermediate I, Intermediate II and
Advanced. Our ESL classes are taught by experienced faculty trained in
ESL instruction.
At
the Lower and Intermediate I levels, students enroll for full-time, intensive
study in each of the three courses offered in the sequences listed below.
Students at the Intermediate II and Advanced levels may enroll in regular
academic courses in their degree program with approval of their academic
advisor.
The
College administers a placement test prior to course registration to determine
a student’s English proficiency and the most appropriate ESL level to
enroll.
At
Broome Community College, international students are accepted directly
in to a degree program and enroll in the appropriate ESL level based in
their English proficiency. Students do not need to reapply for admission
to the College once they complete their ESL instruction. Our international
students enjoy the uniqueness of a small college that integrates its ESL
classes with regular academic study.
