This self-study, lecture, and hands-on course is designed to prepare the participant for the safe and effective administration of local infiltration anesthetics and nitrous oxide analgesia administration. Participants will complete on-line (WebCT-based) self-study prior to attending the lecture and hands-on sessions. Participants must purchase the textbooks, Handbook of Local Anesthesia, Stanley Malamed, 5th edition and the Handbook of Nitrous Oxide and Oxygen Sedation, Morris Clark, 2nd edition. Participants will act as patients and clinicians during the clinical hands-on sessions. If you are pregnant please register after delivery. Upon completion, participants are eligible to apply for NYS certification in Local Infiltration Anesthesia and Nitrous Oxide Analgesia Administration. Class is limited to 26 students and will be offered once each semester.

Class fee: $1,100

MINIMUM COURSE REQUIREMENTS
  • 15 hours on-line pre study with exams
  • 15 patient instances with local anesthesia
  • 16.5 hours lecture
  • 5 nitrous oxide experiences
  • 18 hours lab
  • 10 nitrous oxide observations
Day 1 - Lecture Session/ Nitrous Lab
The lecture session includes: intro to pain control, psychological aspects, selection of pain control modality, anatomical considerations, armamentarium, basic injection technique, infection control, informed consent, record keeping, nitrous oxide analgesia. The day will end with a dentist supervised nitrous oxide lab.

Day 2 - Lecture Session/Nitrous Lab
The lecture session includes: physiology, neurophysiology, pharmacology of local anesthetics, vasoconstrictors, drug selection, local complications, systemic complications, patient evaluation, calculations, supplemental injection techniques, NYS Dental Hygiene Practice Act. There will be a laboratory session in which participants work with local anesthesia armamentarium and become familiar with grasp, technique and positioning. The day will end with a dentist supervised nitrous oxide lab.

Day 3 - Lecture/Hands-on Local Anesthesia Clinical Sessions/Nitrous Lab
The lecture session includes: techniques of maxillary injections, techniques of mandibular injections. Participants will work in pairs practicing maxillary and mandibular injections on each other. Participants will be taught in the BCC Dental Hygiene Clinic under the supervision of a dentist on faculty. After practice with feedback, participants will be evaluated with additional feedback. The day will end with a dentist supervised nitrous oxide lab.

Day 4 - Hands-on Local Anesthesia Clinical Sessions/Nitrous Lab
Maxillary and mandibular infiltration injections skills assessments, patient scenarios and nitrous oxide lab skills assessment.

Completion of all on-line learning modules according to an assigned schedule
Current Health Care Provider CPR Card
Current New York State Dental Hygiene License
COURSE OBJECTIVES
A complete list of the course objectives will be provided in a course syllabus. Once the participant registers for the course a packet of information will be sent including the syllabus, a medical history form, and a complete agenda.

Upon course completion, all participants will be eligible to apply for NYS Certification in Local Infiltration Anesthesia and Nitrous Oxide Analgesia Administration.

CEU Credits: 45 Hours on Continuing Education Credits will be awarded. This will fulfill one cycle of continuing education credits. This course is approved by the NYS State Education Department and the NYS Board of Dentistry.
