Alexis
Dugon (’92)
Structural Engineer
McFarland-Johnson, Inc
Alexis Dugon
(‘92) came to BCC right from high school. She explains,
“I needed to go to a college that was close by. I had my
son when I was 16 years old and I knew I was only going to be
able to go to college for two years.”
Knowing that,
Alexis looked into the programs at BCC. “I researched which
2-year degree I would most likely be hired from and would give
me the best income.” Civil Technology came out on top, and
she has never regretted it.
“It
is a fantastic program to be in, both at BCC and out in the workplace
as a career. It’s rewarding, exciting and challenging. I
have never been bored.”
Alexis first
worked at Delta Engineers for 6 ½ years and worked her
way up to the position of senior engineer. This meant she was
in charge of projects, and one she is especially proud of is the
Chenango Street viaduct in Binghamton.
“It
was awesome to do the design work then go out each week and watch
the progress as the project was completed. I was able to see everything
I had designed actually be built.”
Alexis now
works for McFarland-Johnson, Inc as a structural engineer, again
working on bridges. One of her recent projects was a bridge and
retaining wall for the new Johnson City Traffic Circle. In this
project, she was able to use her creativity to come up with a
design that did what it had to do structurally, but also complemented
a nearby structure which was eligible for the National Historic
Register.
“In
this job, you do have to do some creative problem-solving,”
she said.
