A. Carol Towers (’94)
was a librarian for 20 years with the Broome County Library before
she decided to change careers. She remembered a summer job she
had enjoyed at college doing surveying for the US Forest Service
and she entered the BCC Civil Engineering program to get into
that field. She is now an Engineering Technician at McFarland
Johnson in Binghamton. Her job includes going into the field to
collect data, then using her findings to draw up plans. She worked
on the Clinton Street rehabilitation, mapping out the plans to
straighten the road, put in new drainage, curbs, sidewalks and
lighting. Her most recent project was part of the Route 17/ I-86
upgrade near Liberty, NY. She used data from the field to create
models of what the highway in that area will look like when it
is completed.
“That was new
for me, “ Carol said. “The modeling and rendering…
but I really enjoyed it.”
Carol added that the
modeling projects create “a big feeling of accomplishment
when you’re done.”
BCC helped her make
the adjustment to being an older student. “The Civil Tech
people were marvelous to me. They went out of their way to make
sure I got what I needed.” |
