Introduction to the study of culture as the behavioral adaptation unique
to human societies. Cultural characteristics shared by all humans and
major variations found among specific groups. Explanations for rules of
social interaction in common activities, the social functions of institutions,
language is a culturally defined system of communication, modernization
in our own and third world societies.

An introduction to current archaeological issues, method and theory.
The nature of archaeological data and the means by which they are gathered,
analyzed, dated and interpreted will be considered by reviewing current research on both prehistoric
and historic sites. Scientific methods of research formulation, survey, excavation and analysis will be emphasized in both the laboratory and lecture. The laboratory includes physically demanding survey, excavation and field trips. The laboratory also includes a full weekend trip. Accomadations can be made for students with disabilities.

Introduction to Biological Anthropology

An introduction to the biology and evolutionary history of humans. The
course will consider basic concepts of evolutionary theory and human
genetics, the fossil record for human evolution, the behavior and
ecology of living non-human Primates, and human population biological
adaptation and diversity. Laboratory will include study of primate
evolution, human anatomy and DNA analysis. The laboratory also requires
a full weekend field trip.

An introduction to the multifaceted meanings and uses of language in
society. Basic discussion of issues in the evolution of language, language
learning, language and cultural meaning and sociolinguistics. Relationships
between language and class, race and gender.
