Saving Your
Work
While each application
you work in is a little different, the process of saving files is
quite similar. From your application, click on the “File”
menu on the top left of the program window, and choose “Save”
or “Save As” from the drop down menu. If this is the
first time you have saved this file or you chose “Save As”,
you will see a “Save As” pop-up window. On the top of
the pop-up window will be a “Save In” drop down box.
Choose one of the following options from this box:
1. Network location:
A. The "Z" drive -
This is where most people save their work. BCC performs a backup
of these files every weekday night. The work that you save in
this space, if needed, can be restored from backup tape (Please
visit B-123 for Restore Files Sheet). This drive will be listed
near the bottom of the list as (ex.) “publicj999 on Atlas
(Z:)”).
Note: All data on the Z: drive is deleted at the end of each
semester.
2. Removable Media
A. The
A: drive - The A: drive
is also known as the Floppy Drive. Saving your files on the A:
drive makes your files portable, enabling you to work on them
off-campus. You will need a 3½” floppy disk to
use this method. A Floppy disk can hold 1.4 Megabytes of data.
This drive will be listed near the top of the list as “3½ Floppy
(A:)”.
B. The ZIP Drive - This is available only
if the computer you are using has a ZIP drive and you have
a 3½
“ ZIP cartridge.
After choosing the option you wish to use, type a name for the
file in the “File Name” box at the bottom of the pop-up window.
Click the “Save” button on the bottom of the pop-up
window to complete the save process.
Using FTP (File Transfer Protocol)
FTP is used to copy files between an off-campus computer and
the "Z" drive. You must have an Internet connection on the
off-campus computer to use FTP with the “Z” drive.
C.
Thumb drive - This new techie device plugs into USB ports
to access MB of memory ranging from 56 MB - 512 MB and higher. This
is the newest way to carry your files around.
Using
FTP ( File Transfer Protocol )
FTP is now
secure and needs to be access through this new address. This
only pertains to access from off campus. https://apps.sunybroome.edu
The first time
accessing the site will guide you through the installation of
the Citrix ICA client software. Answer Yes and proceed through
the installation accepting the defaults for all the pop-up windows.
During this initial installation that happens only once, please
be patient, some pop-ups take several minutes before completely
loaded. If you are having problems please refer to Troubleshooting
ICA problems.
For other help
on FTP, please see this page in the Tutorial
Section.
Using WS_FTP for the first time will ask you about your security
access. You need to click the Full Access radio button and the
"Never ask me again for any application" radio button. Please see
this short tutorial for what to expect.
On
campus only: There
are three options available to use FTP:
1. Internet Explorer - This will work best
for simple transfers such as a Word document you plan on taking
off your Z drive.
a. In the address bar, type the Internet address (URL) for
the FTP site you want to connect to. In this case, the address
is ftp://atlas.sunybroome.edu/
b. IE will prompt you for a username and password. Use your campus
computer account username and password.
c. To download a file, right click the item on the page and choose “Download To” from
the menu.
d. To paste items into the FTP site (upload), you can use the
same with files in Windows Explorer or My Computer windows.
2. WS-FTP - Recommended if you are transferring
web site files. For assistance with WS-FTP, please contact the
HelpDesk.
3. DOS FTP - Works well, but is not as easy
to use. However, if you master this FTP process, you will be
able to FTP from almost any platform in the world! For assistance
with DOS FTP, please contact the HelpDesk.
The server
name for your files is atlas.sunybroome.edu
