Broome Community College is well-known for its iTunes U, winning women's soccer team, Ice Center, outstanding transfer programs to both in and out of state universities, nursing and technology degrees, and growing distance education and international program offerings. The College is centrally located and offers a beautiful rolling hills landscape in an urban metropolitan area, providing a wide range of outdoor recreational activities in addition to sophisticated cultural life. Within driving distance of both New York City and Philadelphia, the region has activities for every taste. Challenges and Opportunities Academic Excellence and Student Success BCC has a rich history and a reputation for academic excellence. It has a strong base of transfer education, general education, and career and technical education, offering 468 AAS degrees, 356 AS degrees, 157 AA degrees and 35 Undergraduate Certificates. 42% of the College's students transfer to four-year universities with an overall 84% graduation rate. While online distance education and International programming are currently offered, opportunities exist to implement their strategic expansion. The allied health industry has a strong presence in the community, is among the well-known BCC offerings, and will continue to be focused and enhanced. Continued and new strategic partnerships with K-12, businesses and other employers further provide greater programmatic opportunities for BCC as the local and regional economy changes. Meeting the national and global workforce needs of a population concerned about the environment makes consideration of sustainability/green curriculums attractive. The College will continue to focus on its highly participatory, student focused educational experience that fosters a sense of personal attention, enhancing student success to allow each to reach his or her full potential. Learning Environment The Master Plan represents a comprehensive strategy to enhance the College's infrastructure for its students, employees, and the community. A continued focus on its implementation will support Broome Community College in its efforts to provide a state-of-the art campus experience for everyone. The College is comprised of 15 buildings, some offering new and current construction and technology tools, while others are in need of upgrades. Communication and Leadership It is critical that the president of BCC be committed to the institution, bringing a leadership style that will foster trust and establish credibility within the campus community, to include faculty, staff and students. Someone with an open and collaborative decision-making philosophy and communication style will be well received at BCC. We seek an approachable, outgoing and energetic president who seeks consensus but can also make the hard decisions, advocates and supports the College mission and operational needs to external communities and inspires confidence in the administration of the institution. The faculty and staff will embrace a team-building, mentoring leader who develops and honors the talents of a dedicated employee population. Highly visible on campus and in the greater community, the next president, as advocate and negotiator, will take advantage of the opportunity to establish and maintain positive relationships not only with the internal campus community, but also with labor groups, Trustees, county and state legislators, and community stakeholders. As budget issues become relevant for colleges nationally, success in generating alternative revenue streams and working closely with foundations is desired. Tremendous opportunities exist for the next president to take what has made the college successful and provide visionary leadership to guide BCC to the meet the needs of its current and next generation of students and the community. |
