The Chemical Dependency Counseling program is designed for people wishing to enter the field of addictions counseling and treatment. The program is also designed to provide continuing education for individuals currently working in the field (per recredentialing requirements). The curriculum offers a broad base of social and behavioral sciences, with a concentration in alcohol and drug specialization courses. Coursework is further enhanced through two clinical internships. Coursework is formulated to meet the educational component necessary to apply for New York State Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC) status. Internships partially fulfill requirements for supervised work experience for the credential. Students are mentored regarding the CASAC credentialing process. BCC has applied for NYS Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS) Education Provider status. OASAS is the official certification board for alcohol and substance abuse counseling and preferred provider status verifies the educational component of the program for credentialing. The Chemical Dependency Counseling program provides students with specialized knowledge of drug and alcohol abuse, prevention, and treatment. Students learn individual, group, and family counseling techniques, and serve internships with trained working professionals at various public and private facilities. |

w- Students must take two Writing Emphasis W courses after ENG 110 and before ENG 220. Criteria for Internships: Academic performance is not the only criterion for entrance into the internship components of the program. Professional and experiential considerations determine the appropriateness, performance expectations, and overall suitability of potential student interns. The coordinator and the chairperson of the Psychology, Education, and Human Services Department and the ASA faculty may determine that a given student is not personally ready for internship in a given semester, eventhough that student has completed all the academic prerequisites for the course, and may not permit the student access to the internship until the problem in question has been adequately addressed. Additionally, field supervisors at the provider agency may reject a candidate at the application interview for reasons they deem clinically appropriate and which they determine would make the student inappropriate for placement in that agency at that time e.g., student's not being able to attend/participate. Field supervisors may also remove a student already accepted at any time during the internship if it is determined that the student is resistant to supervision or poses a potential threat/danger to clients in treatment. Registration predicted on number of internships available each semester. **See official print catalog for information regarding Transportation Related to Internship Placement & Clinical Agency Policy During Intership Placement . |

| After BCC then what? | |||
|
As our society has developed a greater awareness of addictions, the need for treatment centers, agencies, and hospitals with expertise to address dependency and provide rehabilitation has increased, resulting in a demand for alcohol and substance abuse counselors. Graduates of the program are prepared for entry-level counselor positions in alcohol and substance abuse treatment facilities, employee assistance programs and as prevention/education specialists in school settings. In addition, graduates can transfer to baccalaureate degree programs in human services, social work and counseling. |
