Cooperative Work Experience: Student Information

Students in the Mechanical Technology Department at Broome Community College can obtain valuable work experience directly related to their field of study by registering for MET298 Cooperative Work Experience (Co-op). Co-op students work paid, part-time jobs in local industries while attending BCC. Work terms coincide with the school semester. Based on the student's credit load, the recommended number of hours a student can work per week varies from 10 to 20.

Requirements for becoming a Co-op student.

To be eligible, students must be registered full-time in the Mechanical Engineering Technology (MET) or Industrial Technology:Mechanical / CADCAM (ITMT) programs, have a GPA of at least 2.2 with no 'F' grades, and have completed at least 24 credit hours, including MET113, MET121, CST106, and MAT130 or higher. Final eligibility decisions will be made by the MT Department Chairperson.

Course Requirements

Work terms will coincide with the school semester. The recommended number of hours
worked per week is based on a student's credit load as follows:

Credits: 12-14 15-17 18-20
Hrs/Week: 18-20 14-17 10-13

Students are required to attend class at BCC during the 1st, 5th, 9th, and 13th weeks of the semester. During the 13th week, students will give an oral presentation detailing their work experience.

Grading

Grades will be either Satisfactory (S) or Unsatisfactory (U) and will not be included in the GPA. Grading will be based on:

1. Class attendance and oral presentation.
2. Employer evaluation.

Continuation of Cooperative Work Experience

Students can register for MET298 more than one consecutive semester if they continue to meet eligibility requirements. Summer registration will not be available and summer employment is strictly between student and employer. Students are encouraged to continue their co-op experience with the same employer to allow them to progress to more responsible work experiences.

Numerous companies have expressed interest in hiring co-op students. Local companies who have participated in the program include IBM, BAE Systems Controls, J&K Plumbing and Heating, Johnson Outdoors, and D&R Technical Solutions..
