BCC Board of Trustees Today
Named Dr. Daniel T. Hayes as Interim President

-Board Highlighted Hayes Vast Knowledge of SUNY,
New York Community Colleges and Communication Style as Key Attributes-

(TOWN OF DICKINSON, NY) The Broome Community College Board of Trustees today approved a motion to hire Dr. Daniel T. Hayes as Interim President. Dr. Hayes will begin his first day on the job on Tuesday, July 1, 2008.

“The Board was very impressed by the fact that every individual we spoke with raved about Dr. Hayes,” said Chairman Robert J. Moppert. “As a previous President of a New York community college Dr. Hayes has maintained excellent working relationships with the state and local sponsor, Ontario County, he possesses an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the SUNY system and is a tremendous communicator. The Trustees feel he has the ability to bring the campus together while we search for a permanent President.”

Dr. Hayes served as the third President at Finger Lakes Community College and was credited with: demonstrating leadership which has led to the creation of new academic programs; enhancing additional main campus College facilities; enhancing and adding campus center and field station facilities; enhancing relations with the College’s sponsor, Ontario County; providing steady and assured leadership during times of crisis and times of institutional prosperity; overseeing an institution that in fall 2006 experienced the highest enrollment in its history; completing a Library and classroom expansion and renovation; working with all appropriate parties to finalize the refurbishment of the Constellation Brands Marvin Sands Performing Arts Center (CMAC) and the completion of the first on-campus student housing facility; and enhancing opportunities for former, current, and prospective students of Finger Lakes Community College. Upon his retirement, the FLCC Trustees conferred upon him the title of "President Emeritus."

"Broome Community College is widely regarded as one of the premier community colleges in New York State,” said Interim President Dr. Hayes. “I am honored and excited by the opportunity to serve the institution as Interim President during this transition.  I genuinely look forward to working with the Trustees, the College's faculty and staff, students, County officials, and the community-at-large as BCC initiates and ultimately completes its search for a new President."

Dr. Hayes retired in 2007 from Finger Lakes Community College after serving as President for 15 years. Dr. Hayes received his Ph.D. in speech communication with a collateral field in higher education from the University of Missouri-Columbia, his master’s degree in speech communication from Emporia State University in Kansas, and his bachelor’s degree in education in English and speech from Kansas State Teacher’s College.

Prior to starting his presidency at FLCC in 1992, Hayes was executive vice president of educational services at South Suburban College in South Holland, Illinois, and dean of instruction at John Wood Community College in Quincy, Illinois. He held faculty positions at the University of Vermont, John Wood Community College, and the Kansas City, Kansas, school district and teaching assistant positions at the University of Missouri and Emporia State University.

In addition, Dr. Hayes authored articles on higher education, administration, the community college role, and various specialized pieces within his academic discipline of speech communication. He also wrote six chapters in the Matthew Bender three-volume series “Education Law”.

Under the leadership of Dr. Hayes, FLCC was ranked by students first among all community colleges in the state for quality of instruction and faculty preparedness in the academic year 2000, and in 2002 led SUNY in Community College graduation rates.

The BCC Board of Trustees hired Dr. Hayes as Interim President for six months, with a six month option to continue. Dr. Hayes will earn an annual salary of $135,500, and will be provided with a prorated $5,000 annual car allowance and $8,000 annual housing allowance.
