Make a difference in your environment and provide a harmonious, ecologically sound home for your family and you.  Learn about creating a healthy home through recycling, making wise choices for home products, and reducing household pollutants.

Sustainable Trends in Building Design
The environmental impact of the building design and construction industry is significant.  In the United States and abroad, buildings are responsible for a large percentage of the total annual energy, electricity, and water usage.  Architects and engineers are increasingly incorporating sustainable design strategies into their projects, reducing the negative impact of a building on its surroundings.  This seminar will focus on sustainable architecture and engineering trends that are having the greatest influence on the building industry.

Climate Study Methods
We are familiar with the conclusions scientists have drawn about global climate change, but we rarely hear about the basis for those conclusions.  In this workshop, methods and types of data used in studying climate will be addressed.  The advantages of and problems with many of them will be identified.

Macrobiotic Cooking
During an era of genetically engineered food and food loaded with toxins, macrobiotic cooking can be an excellent, healthy alternative...not to mention that macrobiotic cuisine tastes delicious.  Be sure to stop by the macrobiotic table in the Student Center entryway, where you can meet macrobiotic cook Theresa Delafield, sample a macrobiotic dish, and pick up some recipes.

Environmental Ethics
Join this session for an examination of the ethical systems that shape our view of the environment and our obligation to it.

Global Panel on Environmental Concerns
Join international student panelists as they discuss environmental issues in their home countries. Find out the status of global warming, water availability, and other concerns from students from around the world.

Our Campus Carbon Footprint
A carbon footprint is the measure of the impact of human activities on the environment in terms of the amount of greenhouse gases produced.  As part of BCC's commitment toward building a sustainable campus, we will examine our carbon footprint and discuss strategies that may be implemented to reduce our greenhouse gas production.

Gas is $4.50 a gallon! What does a BCC student do?
Broome Community College is primarily a commuter campus; the cost of gas is sky high.  Using a “deliberation discussion” format, students will brainstorm possible solutions to this dilemma.  Student Assembly members will participate.

Film Screening of Lessons of Darkness & Discussion led by David Chirico
Werner Herzog's 1992 film is an hour-long document that explores the landscape of ecological devastation left by the first Gulf War. Shot entirely on location, Lessons of Darkness gives the viewer a clear vision of an environment destroyed by conflict, and details the enormous difficulty of extinguishing Kuwait's burning oilfields. This is a visually arresting and unforgettable glance at a planet on fire.
