What is it like to take an online course?

While all of our fully online courses are offered through the ANGEL Learning Management System; layout, structure and learning activities can vary from course to course. The videos on the Tour an Online Course page will give you a general idea of what a online course might look like as well as some of the types of possible learning activities you would be asked to complete.

If you would like to explore the ANGEL Learning Management System yourself, OPEN SUNY provides access to a demonstration course through their website.

How do I know that I'm ready to take an online course?

Online courses are as challenging as face-to-face courses, but also require a certain level of comfort with working with technology.  We have a brief Student Readiness Quiz which may help you clarify if are prepared to take courses online. Open SUNY provides additional tools for assessing your skills and preparedness for taking online courses.

How do I know if the course I signed up for is online, blended, or on campus?

Courses that contain a Y designator in the course number, for example BIO 131 Y02,  are FULLY ONLINE courses and typically do not have a local meeting time or place.   But, some Y designated courses may require proctored exams or some other synchronous component (clinical experience, face to face meeting, etc).  If you have a question as to whether or not a Y designated course has a synchronous component, contact the course instructor or department.

Courses that contain a B designator are BLENDED or HYBRID courses.  This means the course meets online as well as face-to-face in a classroom, but it has less seat time than a traditional face-to-face class.

Courses that meet on campus do not have the Y or B designator in the course number. For example, BIT 142 70.

More information on the difference between the course designators for the types of courses offered at SUNY Broome can be found on the Types of Online Courses page..

Are all Y designated courses fully online? Will I have to come to campus?

Typically there are no required face-to-face or synchronous (specific online meeting time) components included in the fully online courses (Y designated courses) unless specified by the instructor/department. That is not to say that they are self-paced, as there will be class activities that you need to participate in each week and due dates that you must meet.  Contact the instructor or department if you have any questions about meeting time/place requirements for fully online or blended courses.
