Admission for Health Science Programs

Entry into the following Health Science programs at Broome Community College is based on a competitive admissions process: Clinical Laboratory Technology (Campus-based, Fast-Track and On-line Options), Dental Hygiene, Health Information Technology, Medical Assistant, Nursing, Nursing Evening/Weekender, Physical Therapist Assistant, and Radiologic Technology.

The above programs begin with the fall semester only, except the Nursing Evening/Weekender and the Clinical Laboratory Technology (On-line Option) programs, which begin with the spring semester only. (There is limited enrollment in the Clinical Laboratory Technology Fast-Track Option for the spring semester).

What academic preparation is needed for admission consideration?

Applicants to the above listed Health Science programs must have specific academic background in math and sciences, either from high school or at the college level, to be considered for admission.

The required math level and science course background vary by degree program. For some degree programs, minimum grades are also required for admission consideration.

Clinical Laboratory Technology Fast-Track and On-line Options require specific college-level prerequisites (See the Clinical Laboratory Technology Department website for more information)

Prerequisite courses “in progress” will not be considered when admission decisions are made.

What is the Competitive Admissions Process?

The Competitive Admissions process compares the academic strength of applicants with respect to the academic preparation required for a specifi c Health Science program. An Admissions Committee assesses each applicant’s academic performance in the math and science background required for the Health Science program to which they have applied. Offers of admission are made based on an applicant’s academic strength (grades in prerequisite subjects and high school average or college GPA) compared to other applicants and the number of seats available in a particular program. Meeting the minimum math level and science course background does not guarantee admission.

When can an applicant apply and what is the deadline to complete the application process?

The Admissions Office begins taking applications to the spring and fall semesters on September 15 of the year preceding entry. For admissions consideration to the Evening/Weekend Nursing program (beginning with the Spring semester), an Application Form and all official academic records (transcripts) required by the College must be received in the Admissions Office by October 26. Applications will still be considered after this deadline should seats still be available in the Evening/Weekend Nursing program.

For admission consideration to the programs beginning in the Fall semester, an Application Form and all official academic records (transcripts) required by the College must be received in the Admissions Office by March 1. (Incomplete applications will not be considered.)

Please note: the Admissions Office will begin making early offers of admission to a selected number of highly qualified applicants in mid-February. Remaining admission decisions will be made after the March 1 deadline. Applications received after March 1 will be considered on a space available basis.

What if an applicant does not have the necessary academic preparation for admission consideration or is not admitted through the competitive admissions process?

Health Science applicants who do not have the necessary academic preparation for admission consideration or who are not admitted through the competitive admissions process, may enroll in preparatory courses to meet entrance requirements or to strengthen their academic background for future admission consideration. However, students who choose this option will still need to go through the competitive admissions process. Completion of preparatory coursework does not guarantee future admission to a Health Science program. 

Advisement is available to assist students in selecting appropriate preparatory coursework and planning a timetable for future admission consideration. Applicants may also choose other degree or certificate programs offered at Broome Community College. Career counseling is also available to students who wish to explore other career options. What additional information should applicants know about who are pursuing a Health Science program of study?

Graduates of programs in the Health Sciences must meet the criteria established for each profession for good moral character. Individuals who have been found guilty of a felony, or pleaded guilty to a felony, may not meet eligibility requirements for certification and/or licensure by some agencies and organizations. In some cases, this means that an individual would not be able to be employed in that health science field. Some certification or licensure agencies may grant waivers based on mitigating circumstances. Contact the relevant certifying or licensing agency directly for more information about eligibility.
