English Language Proficiency

All non-native speakers of English students applying for admission at SUNY Broome are required to take an English placement test (ACCUPLACER ESL) upon their arrival at SUNY Broome. 

The ACCUPLACER ESL consists of five sections: Language Use, Listening, Reading Skills, Sentence Meaning (each with 20 multiple-choice questions), and a written essay assessment. The College administers this test prior to course registration every semester.
Based on their test results, students will be placed in regular college-level English courses (Levels 5 & 6) or college-preparatory ESL courses (Levels 1-4). (see Sequence of ESL and English Courses for ESL Students below)

  • Students who score at levels 1 through 4 need to enroll in full-time, intensive ESL study and continue ESL coursework each semester until they are ready for college-level English courses (Levels 5 & 6).
  • Students who score at college-level English proficiency level (Levels 5 & 6) may take college writing courses along with regular academic courses in their program of study.

Criteria for Exemption from Placement Testing:
Students who have test scores which meet one of the criteria below are not required to take the ACCUPLACER and can start taking English college-level courses (Levels 5 & 6) and also courses in their programs of study:

  • TOEFL score of 79 iBT, 200 CBT, or 500 paper-based, or higher;
  • IELTS score of 6.5 or higher;
  • IKEN grade of 1;
  • iTEP score of 4.5.

Students who have test scores which do not meet these criteria are required to take the ACCUPLACER for proper placement.

ESL/ENG Courses for Non-native Speakers of English
SUNY Broome offers a full range of English as a second language (ESL) and English courses that will prepare non-native speakers of English (i.e., international and immigrant) students for college-level English proficiency.  These courses are offered each academic semester in six different levels of proficiency. The ESL courses are designed as a series of three courses, expected to be completed together. Students must complete one level successfully before moving on to a higher level. At ESL levels (1 to 3), students do NOT take courses toward their major but instead are improving their English skills for the college course work. Students at levels 4 to 6 take classes toward their degree as advised by their department advisers.
