I'm originally from Berkshire (Tioga County), New York, and now live in Newark Valley, about a 40 minute drive from campus. I'm married to Dr. Marilyn Akins, a professor in the Engineering Science Department here at BCC, and we have a daughter Jennifer, who is now married and living in Kentucky with two daughters of her own. Hmm, I guess that makes me a grandfather! I don't feel that old!

I have been a professional announcer, mostly radio work, since 1973 when I started as a part time disc jockey at what was then WEBO AM/FM in Owego, NY. Over the years I was a news director, copywriter, production director, and operations manager at various times and radio stations, including WENE, WMRV, WTKO (Ithaca), and WINR. I also started recording voice-overs for WBNG-TV in late 1985, and continued to do so until new owners changed things and stopped calling me in, in 2002. I took a break from full-time broadcasting in 1981 when I went to work as a service technician for a local office machine company. While there I started taking classes at BCC part time. I left the company after a couple years and took classes full time, and went back to broadcasting part time while studying.
I worked at IBM as a co-op student during the summer of 1985, but they cut back in hiring that year so I got a job that fall as a research technician at a local manufacturer of power line filters. Meanwhile I was graduated from BCC in 1986 (took courses out of sequence so had to wait until then to finish) with an AAS in Electrical Technology. I went back into broadcasting in 1989, but in 1992 I got out of full time broadcasting when I became service manager for Computer Solutions Unlimited, a computer service and sales outfit in downtown Binghamton (now known as Net2000).
I came to BCC in March of 1998 as the Technical Assistant in charge of the computers and other equipment in the Decker Health Sciences Center, the newest building on campus, at the time. Since then I have earned an AAS in Telecommunications Technology and an AS in Computer Science.
I am on campus 8AM to 4PM, Monday through Friday, on days the students are here during the fall and spring semesters.
If you have problems with any equipment in the Decker building, feel free to call me (x5706) or look for me in my office in 226-A, off the second floor study center lounge. E-mail is also a good option, as I check it often during the day: akins_c@mail.sunybroome.edu
