The AAS in Accounting prepares graduates for immediate employment as
paraprofessionals in the accounting field. Graduates will find jobs as bookkeepers,
accounting assistants, tax specialists, account clerks, junior accountants and accounting
technicians. The program is designed for persons seeking employment immediately upon
completion of the curriculum and is also designed for those who desire to increase their
accounting knowledge and update their skills. Students interested in transferring to a
four-year college or university to major in Accounting should consult the
Program Coordinator, the Business
Department Chair or the
Staff Associate to the Dean as early as
possible for further guidance.
Graduates of this program are in demand by businesses, state and local
governments, non-profit agencies, hospitals, nursing homes and public accounting
concerns. As the number of qualified CPA candidates decreases due to the new
CPA educational requirements, the demand for qualified paraprofessional
accountants will increase. The US Department of Labor projects plentiful job
openings nationwide due to the large size of this occupation through the year
2012. Many openings will occur due to attrition and promotion. The New York
State Department of Labor projects a 13% increase in job openings throughout New
York State through the year 2012.
