Will My Credits Transfer?
|
|
This question is the most asked question by students who are thinking about transferring to
another college. The first place to seek those answers is the college you wish to transfer to.
However, here are some tips and tricks to maximize transfer of your BCC credits.
- Work closely with both your BCC academic advisor and an admissions representative from the
college you wish to transfer to. Your BCC academic advisor can supply a lot of excellent
information but the four-year college has the last word on course transferability.
- It is the student's responsibility to know the admissions requirements and the degree requirements
of the four-year school.
- Most SUNY schools have course equivalency information on their website. We have provided
links to many of them.
- Understand the rules of transfer for the college you wish to transfer to; this information
is usually found on the four-year college website in an area designated for Transfer Students.
- Just because a course transfers to a four-year school doesn't mean it is applicable to the
degree program you are seeking.
- Complete as many of the SUNY General Education
requirements here before transferring to your four-year SUNY campus.
- Check the transferability of the courses before you take them. Most likely, this
information is available on the college website or call the Admissions Office for the
four-year college.
- Find out what the minimum grade is for acceptance of credit. Some colleges require higher
grades for courses in your intended major.
- Beware of changes in degree requirements at your future college as you complete your BCC
degree; this may affect your acceptance to the college and course transfer. Some colleges may
change a program and require different courses.
- When selecting an elective at BCC, select one that makes sense for transfer. Do not take
fluff courses.
- Finish all your science and math courses here at BCC. This will give you more time to
concentrate on your major at your four-year school.
- Foreign language: each four-year school has different foreign language requirements.
Check with your four-year school to see if transfer students will be required to take a foreign
language. Some business programs require foreign language and some do not. If you are required
to take a foreign language, take it at BCC.
- Check with your future college about the age of your college credit. Some colleges will
not transfer credit if the course was taken many years ago.
- Consult with your future college often.
- Be prepared to supply course descriptions (General Catalog) and a course syllabus to your
future college (keep all course syllabi) for transfer verification.
