	CHM 266 LABORATORY EXPERIMENT

	C, H, AND N ANALYZER
Analysis of a Compound for Carbon, Hydrogen and Nitrogen

Principle
The Model 240B Elemental Analyzer accurately determines the carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen content of organic compounds (CO2, H2O and nitrogen). Combustion occurs with pure oxygen under static conditions. The combustion products are then analyzed automatically in a self-integrating, steady state, thermal conductivity analyzer which eliminates the tedious weighing of absorption traps associated with classical gravimetric analysis.

Procedure

	A. Run a blank and conditioning sample (acetanilide) following the attached directions.

	B. Run a blank again then go to C.

	C. Calibrate the Perkin Elmer Elemental Analyzer with acetanilide following the attached directions (sample size 1-3 mg). This must be done at the beginning of each laboratory period. Determine K values.

	D. Obtain an unknown and determine the elemental composition of this compoundx (sample size 1-3 mg). Run 2-3 trials of the unknown if time permits.
