How to make Netscape 3.0 open Powerpoint

Hopefully, Netscape will ask you how you want to handle these file types. If this is the case, press "Pick Application", and find your MSOffice directory. Probably c:/msoffice.

Look for the Word and for the Powerpoint Icons.

If trying to open a .ppt file, select the Powerpoint Icon.

If trying to select a .doc file, select the Word Icon.

Click OK and you should be seeing either the Powerpoint presentation or the Word document.

That should set your Netscape permanently to automatically recognize the files.

If you can't get this to work, you may have to do this more manually.

Read on.... (I hope you won't have to go past this point!)

Click Options/General Preferences/Helpers

Click Create New Type, and enter:

Mime Type: application/ppt

Mime sub type: ppt and Click OK.

File Extension: enter ppt

With the new entry highlighted, select Browse. You need to find your powerpoint executable.

Look for the /MSOFFICE/POWERPOINT directory. It's probably on C: drive.

Click the powerpoint icon and close windows.

If Microsoft Word does not open for the .doc files, you will have to repeat this process to point to the /MSOFFICE/WORD directory, and Word.exe file as well.

You have to close out Netscape and bring it up again.
