Mathematics General Education Requirement Notice

Upon graduation from a four-year SUNY school, students are required to be mathematically prepared to take a pre-calculus level course. To ensure this level of preparation the State Education Department has developed the following plan.

  1. If you successfully completed a pre-calculus course in high school, then you may, but need not, take another Mathematics course in college unless it is required for your major.
  2. If you passed the Course 3 Regents exam or the Math B exam with a score of 85 or higher, then you may, but need not, take another Mathematics course in college unless it is required for your major.
  3. If you did not successfully meet either of the first two criteria in high school, then you must complete a course sanctioned by the State Education Department before you can get your four-year degree.

The following courses and sequences at BCC have been approved as satisfying the General Education Requirement:

MAT115/MAT116-- Mathematical for General Education I,II

MAT119/MAT120 -- Mathematics for Elementary Education I,II

MAT136 -- College Algebra and Trigonometry

MAT146 -- Applied Business Calculus

MAT156 -- Algebra and Trigonometry for Calculus
