How to Succeed in an Online Course

BCC has been offering online courses since 1997. In that time, we've learned some things about what it takes to successfully complete an online course. Not all students possess the necessary qualities to perform well online. Please read on to see what it takes to success in an online course.

There is no substitute for time on task. As in any learning environment, time + energy = learning. One of the challenges with online classes is that, as a student, you are responsible for managing your time effectively. You will need to allocate a realistic amount of time to complete course learning activities. You should expect to spend 3-4 hours of work per credit hour of the course. For example, 9-12 hours for a 3 credit course, and your should plan on interacting in your course several times during the week.

The flexibility and convenience of the online environment requires a highly motivated, self-disciplined student. Good time management is the secret to succeeding in distance learning! Although you have the flexibility of logging in at your convenience, online courses are not self-paced. For each course, you will be required to logon several times per week to participate in course activities. The most successful students log on more frequently. Your professor will require on-time posting of discussions and assignments. We have found that students who fall behind, rarely manage to catch up. Set up a weekly schedule allocating time for your course work. Good time management skills are essential to your success.

You will need certain tools to succeed. You will need frequent access to a computer with the required hardware and software. See computer requirements under Getting Started. Our online courses are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If you have your own computer, you can access your course(s) when it is most convenient to you. If you must depend on the use of someone else's computer, you must make sure you do not fall behind.

You will be communicating via text, so you will need to be comfortable expressing your thoughts and opinions, as well as phrasing your questions, in writing. Good reading, writing, and keyboarding skills are important for success in your online course.

Our readiness quiz can help you predetermine the likelihood that you will do well in the online environment. If you have additional questions about your ability to be successful in an online course, consult with the online academic advisor or the advisor for your major.

If you follow these guidelines you should do well in your online course. Good luck!
