BCC Ecology Club to Host Earth
Day Awareness Event Friday Morning

-“Garbage Audit” Planned to Highlight Importance of Recycling-

(TOWN OF DICKINSON, NY) The Broome Community College Ecology Club will host a “garbage audit” from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 27, 2007 on campus.

A “garbage audit” is an event designed to raise awareness about the importance of recycling. From 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., BCC students will collect garbage bags from several dumpsters across campus.  Students will then separate any recyclables out of the garbage into two large piles on the campus quad.

“The Ecology Club wants to create awareness that not everything we throw into the garbage is waste,” said Ecology Club Advisor Jeff Bohner. “Many of the items can be recycled. As Earth Day takes place in April we thought it was important to make a visible and meaningful contribution about how we can better treat the planet.”

At 11:00 a.m. students will collect both the waste and recycled items and transport them to the Broome County Landfill. At the landfill, both the waste and recyclables will be weighed to determine just how many recyclables have been saved and the weight of the recycled pile.

“There are currently a variety of containers throughout campus for students to discard recyclables,” continued Bohner. “However we can always do better. People need to make conscious decisions to recycle, not just discard every item in the nearest trash receptacle.”
