Harvard Medical School Asks BCC Associate Professor
To Speak To Post Doctoral Researchers About Career Alternatives

-BCC Associate Professor Jenifer Musa Will Speak To Group Thursday-

(TOWN OF DICKINSON, NY) Broome Community College President Dr. Laurence Spraggs today announced that Harvard Medical School has asked Associate Professor of Biology Jennifer Musa to speak to post-doctoral researchers from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., Thursday, September 20, 2007 in Boston, MA.

Dr. Musa will host a career discussion for post-doctoral students about non-traditional alternatives to going straight into research at a large university after receiving a Ph.D.

“Until the last few years the research field has really been the only career available for individuals who receive a doctorate in a specific science,” said Professor Musa. “When I first received my Ph.D., I was guided right into the research track that would eventually result in a teaching position. This is a standard career track for individuals with Ph.D.’s in a variety of sciences. I hope to stress to this group that there are a number of other very rewarding career options available.”

Dr. Musa has worked at BCC since 2001 and is also a freelance science writer. Dr. Musa received her Ph.D. in neuro-biology from the University of Vermont. She attended SUNY Oswego for her undergraduate work. After receiving her Ph.D., Dr. Musa also spent six years working as a research associate at Cornell University where she still spends summers doing basic research.

“When I was first asked to speak at Harvard I was very excited,” continued Musa. “Harvard is a very prestigious academic institution and the fact that they want me to talk about my career and share my experiences at Broome Community College reinforces their commitment to highlighting the diverse career opportunities available to individuals who receive a doctoral science degree.”

“Dr. Musa certainly represents the best that Broome Community College has to offer,” said BCC President Dr. Laurence Spraggs. “She is among a number of talented and dedicate faculty that ensure our students receive the highest caliber of education possible and is a true asset to the students and this institution.”
