Broome Community College

Ranked #1 in New York For Retention

-82% of Students Who Transfer To 4-Year SUNY Schools Stay Enrolled-

(TOWN OF DICKINSON, NY) Broome Community College President Dr. Laurence Spraggs today announced that  based on data released from the system office of the State University of New York (SUNY), BCC  is first among  SUNY Community Colleges in retention at the four-year level.

Eighty-two percent of BCC students who transfer to 4-year SUNY colleges  are still enrolled at least one year  later.    Among  the  29 SUNY Community Colleges,   BCC has the highest retention rate based on a study of 4-year transfer students from the community college sector to the 4 year-sector.

“This  achievement is significant for a number of reasons,” said BCC President Dr. Laurence Spraggs. “Essentially this is a measure of the effectiveness of Broome Community College  in prepar ing students for their junior and senior years at four year institutions. The primary reason this is significant is because study after study has illustrated that the majority of students who stay enrolled for at least one year  tend to graduate eventually.”

SUNY released the retention data earlier this month.   The data is based on students who entered the SUNY community college system in Fall 2003, 2004 and 2005.

“One of the primary reasons Broome secured the top spot is the experience and dedication of our faculty and staff,” continued Dr. Spraggs. “Our faculty and staff promote individual attention both inside and outside the classroom and our academic counselors work with students to identify the course of study that best fits with a student’s interest. In addition, the rigor of coursework at BCC prepares students for the intensity of study at four year institutions.”
