BCC To House 200 Emergency Workers & Volunteers From (TOWN OF DICKINSON, NY) Broome Community College President Dr. Laurence Spraggs announced the College will house approximately 200 emergency workers and volunteers from communities across New York State who have traveled to the Southern Tier to assist in flood recovery efforts. The emergency personnel and volunteers will be housed in the Ice Center, which is located at the northern tip of campus. The College was notified that personnel would begin arriving at the Ice Center tonight in shifts beginning in the “early evening” hours. “BCC is committed to assisting in our region’s recovery efforts in any way possible,” said President Dr. Laurence Spraggs. “The College’s close proximity to the Public Safety Building, which is the regional command center for the flood of 2006, makes the campus an ideal location to house emergency personnel and volunteers and ensure a coordinated response.” Officials from the Broome County Sheriff’s Office and Broome County Office of Emergency Services notified College officials Wednesday evening that emergency personnel from dozens of municipalities across the state would be in need of shelter as part of the recovery process. At this point, the Sheriff’s Office has not indicated the length of time emergency workers will stay. “BCC will shelter these guests and provide access to campus amenities for as long as needed,” continued Dr. Spraggs. “Centralizing emergency responders in one location will assist in saving time and ensuring a comprehensive recovery effort. Fortunately the campus was not impacted by the flooding, but many of our neighboring communities, as well as staff and students were affected. We are also working with local officials on identifying additional ways BCC can assist in recovery operations.” The Ice Center houses five locker rooms, which contain showers, changing areas and bathroom facilities. In addition, the facility houses conference rooms, eating areas and a large open area where workers can sleep. |
