Writing Center

The BCC Writing Center Staff: Fall 2008
located in L-8

The Writing Center's staff consists of professional tutors who have earned graduate degrees (and/or they are enrolled in graduate programs) and have extensive experience as teachers and writing tutors. All members of our staff receive ongoing training in tutoring and teaching pedagogies. We work collaboratively with students; together the student and tutor decide how to focus a tutorial session.

Susan Y. Williams (Writing Center Coordinator) -- A college drop-out, Susie finally returned to highephoto of Wiliamsr education in the mid-eighties. After graduating from BCC, she received undergraduate and graduate English degrees from SUNY-Binghamton and then worked there. She was most interested in and involved with teaching composition, and she coordinated the study skills program. She taught and worked in the Educational Opportunity Program during the years when it offered opportunities for students to develop their critical literacy in summer learning communities and academic year linked-courses programs. In 1999 Susie returned to BCC as an English Department faculty member; she works in the Writing Center to promote active learning. An advocate of reflective teaching and learning, she believes that education can be emancipatory. (A reformed Yankees fan, she now proudly claims membership in Boston's "Fellowship of the Miserable." Go Sox.)

photo of Matt

Matt Brannen -- A graduate of BCC, Matt studied History at Binghamton University. After being told that a History paper had "more holes in it than the Titanic," Matt resorted to finally becoming a better writer. This led him to earn a BS in History and a Master of Arts in Teaching Social Studies. At BCC, Matt also is an adjunct instructor in the History Department, is a professional tutor in the Learning Assistance Center, and the coordinator of the Supplemental Instruction Program. His writing is no longer compared to the Titanic.

Kelley has taught 2nd grade, 6th grade, and many college-level courses, including learning community linked courses. Kelley has taught and tutored EOP, ESL, and many other students. She teaches all levels of composition and especially enjoys working with students enrolled in Eng. 090.

photo of Kate

Kate Camarena -- Kate was born in Washington state, graduated high school in Kansas, and eventually made her way to the Gulf Coast to earn her BA in English from the University of West Florida in 2002. In 2005, she received her MA in English from the University of North Florida. In the summer of 2006, she relocated to the Binghamton area with her husband and two cats, and soon after, she started her first teaching job here at BCC.

photo of Michael

Michael Demson -- Mike was born and raised in Toronto, Canada. He moved to Portland Oregon and graduated from Reed College with a BA in English. Mike pursued graduate studies in comparative literature (specializing in European Romanticism) and taught at Queens College. Currently he is working on his Ph.D. dissertation on Rousseau and Shelley and teaching English and composition at BCC.

photo of ChrisChris Divers -- Chris earned a BA from Marshall University, an MA from Cleveland State, a MFA in Creative Writing from Bowling Green. He's also a history buff. Chris calls himself an escapee from the backwoods of West Virginia, with too many degrees (according to family) for someone so poor. Chris teaches in the BCC English Department. His Commemorative Nickel is displayed in the Writing Center.

Josh Lewis -- bio and pic coming!

Jillian

Jillian Mason-Posemato -- A graduate of Broome Community College, Colgate University, and Binghamton University, Jillian worked in publishing; she is currently the Writing Center Director at Binghamton, where she a;sp teaches English courses and trains graduate students.

photo of Audrey

Audrey Murfin -- Audrey grew up in Miami, Florida, and went to Reed College in Portland, Oregon. She is currently writing her dissertation, working towards a Ph.D. in English Literature from Binghamton University. She reads addictively and sometimes indiscriminately, so if she is ever chasing you, just drop some pamphlets in the road. When not reading, writing or tutoring, you can find her walking her giant shaggy dog in Otsiningo Park.
