English Language Proficiency

All non-native speakers of English must demonstrate an acceptable English language proficiency to be considered for admission to SUNY Broome Community College. This requirement can be met by submission of:

  • Official academic records which show the successful completion of at least four years of English language study at the secondary level or higher, or
  • A 3-credit college level writing course from a regionally accredited institution with a grade of C or better. or
  • A minimum TOEFL score of 32 iBT (Internet-based Test), 97 cBT (Computer-based Test) or 400 PBT (Paper-based Test).

These students must then take an English placement test (COMPASS) in reading, writing, listening, and grammar upon their arrival at SUNY Broome Community College to determine their English course level.

Students who score at the lower or intermediate English proficiency level need to enroll in full-time, intensive English-as-a-Second Language (ESL) study and continue ESL coursework each semester until an appropriate proficiency is met. Students who score or progress to an advanced English proficiency level may take regular academic courses in their program of study along with continued ESL/English study.

Students with the appropriate academic background are exempt from the placement test and may begin the regular academic curriculum in their program of study if they submit:

  • A TOEFL score of 79 iBT, 200 CBT, or 500 paper-based (or higher), or
  • A score of 6.5 or higher on the IELTS.

An EIKEN taker with a grade of 1 can start taking ENG 107; an EIKEN taker with a grade lower than 1 (i.e., Pre-1; 2; 3; 4; or 5) must take the English placement test for proper placement.
